I did not begin 2022 with much in the way of resolutions, celebrations, or elevated intentions. The only vaguely symbolic thing I managed on the first day of the year was to walk down to the beach at the end of my road to fill a large plastic bucket with purple seaweed exposed by low tide.

Then, I lugged the bucket back to my tiny back garden and layered it on top of the compost pile I started back in May when I moved into my flat. A final garnish of microorganisms and nitrogen until, in some weeks time, the pile will hopefully be rested and ready to be sifted to take on its new role: The basis of new life in my feeble yet earnest container garden.

The pile itself is nothing fancy. Just an upright plastic composter I bought for £10 on Facebook Marketplace from a nice old man.
